Covid 19 - Spring Season Cancellation

Good morning friends.

We hope this email finds you all healthy and safe.  First and foremost, a heart-felt thank you to all of our essential workers continuing to put themselves in harmâ??s way to ensure our safety and health. We salute you and promise that when this is all over we will not forget your courage and dedication to our community.

After listening to the Governorâ??s daily briefings as well as reviewing materials from the CDC and the Federal Government, along with guidance from Little League International, Plainview Little League has reached the conclusion that it will be just too difficult to move forward with our Spring Season. While there is good news on the horizon in the phased reopening that will begin today across New York State, Long Island has not reached the metrics provided to begin reopening. Even when we do reach Phase 1, we do not know when group recreational activities will be able to resume, but it likely will not be until at some point this summer. Therefore, with tremendous sadness, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 Spring Season.

For years, Plainview Little League has done its absolute best to control costs, conserve resources and spend the Communityâ??s money responsibly. Because of the size of our program, we do not have the luxury of waiting until mid-March before spending money on insurance, uniforms, equipment, permits, etc. A vast majority of these expenses are incurred during the winter. This year was no different. The League spent considerable money on Spring Season preparations before the shutdown occurred. Despite that, the Board of Directors has authorized a 100% credit of the Spring Intramural registration fee to the Plainview Little League Account of each of our members. Members may use the Account Credit for any future non-travel-related program (e.g., fall intramurals, 2021 spring intramurals, winter training, or combinations thereof), and may apply it to future registrations for siblings.

Each sports program in Plainview and on Long Island is unique. Our registration runs season by season as opposed to annually, which allows us to be able to offer the above credit, whereas other youth sports programs may not be able to do so.  This does not mean that one program is better than the other, or that one program is more responsible. We are offering this solution to our membership, knowing that it requires us to utilize several thousand dollars from our reserves in order to be able to do so.  We do so, however, understanding that many of our members are facing difficult economic times. Our hope is that when our next program registration is offered, members will apply their credit to their son or daughter's registration and not have to make a difficult decision about whether or not their children can continue to play the game they love due to their financial situation at that time.

PLL is confident there will be Baseball and Softball in 2020. With the phased reopening and the possibility of camp closures, we hope to offer programs this summer.  We are in the planning stages now as we work on structure, potential travel ball conflicts and enhanced safety guidelines.  We will provide details on this new program in the near future. We also expect a larger fall registration this year and encourage all of our players (including those that may be aging out) to consider playing this fall. Our aging out children deserve a final season on our fields and we will do everything in our power to give them that opportunity. And importantly, all of our non-travel programs will be played in-house to limit interaction with other neighborhoods and communities. We believe this will help not only our community, but Long Island in general as we strive to keep the rate of infection low so we can avoid a second phase of the virus.

These last few months have been very difficult for our community. But the weather is warming up, the sun is coming out and we will all get through this together.  Your Little League is here for you. If we can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at plainviewbaseball@plainviewbaseball.org.
